Provision of Broadband Research and Development Services for the Access in the research network GRNET-2

Definition :

The “Provision of Broadband Research and Development Services for the Access in the research network GRNET-2” project focuses on the Provision of Broadband Research and Development Services for the Access of 39 Undergrad Institutions as well as 14 Research Institutes and organizations in the research network GRNET-2.

The project will be implemented taking as granted the action for the implementation of the GRNET-3 network which concerns the development at national scale of the advanced high speed backbone based on the rights of long-term use of the optical fibers infrastructures and the broadcast and switching equipment under the total control of GRNET that will allow the connection of the GRNET nodes (routers and switchers) at up to 10 Gb/s speeds. The proposed project concerns the provision of access services through which 39 Undergrad Institutions as well as 14 Research Institutes and organizations of the country will be connected with the respective GRNET-2 – and the under implementation GRNET-3- nodes (or points of presence), using optical fiber technologies at the extra high speeds in the order of Gbps.

The project consists of five subprojects. One of the afore mentioned subprojects concerns the provision of access services in the order of Gbps for the initial period of the project so that the best connection of the GRNET organizations and the best functionality with GRNET-2 is achieved. Two subprojects concern the acquirement of the Rights of Use of the Optical Infrastructure for the Institutions and Institutes in the regions of Athens and Thessalonica for the building of Metropolitan Optical Fiber Networks. Another subproject concerns the equipment provision required by the organizations for the access in GRNET network at speeds in the order of Gbps. Finally, a subproject concerns a series of actions undertaken by GRNET in order to ensure the functionality with the existing backbone, the quality and the best development of the provided access services in GRNET-2 for research purposes by the Third Degree Education Institutions and Institutes during the project.

Duration :

Beginning: 01/05/2005, End: 31/11/2008, duration: 43 months

Objectives :

The present project aims at ensuring for all the Institutions of Third Degree Education and Research Institutions of the country the access to high quality interconnection services and connection with the international Internet, rendering possible the access to advanced telematics services as well as the use of advanced protocols pointing out the support of multimedia applications (tele-education, tele-medicine, tele-working etc.), the support of super-computing centers, virtual libraries and laboratories, etc. The project offers to every Institution/Institute Services of Research and Development in the form of broadband access towards a point of presence of the GRNET-2 network and the under implementation GRNET-3.

The continuation of the project for the Institutions and Institutes in the regions of Athens and Thessalonica is ensured with the acquirement of long-term Rights of Use of Optical Fiber Infrastructure for the building of Metropolitan Optical Fiber Networks in these cities in the frame of the existing project. Respectively, Metropolitan Networks for the remaining cities of the country are implemented in the frame of the Invitation 93 project in the Measure 4.2 (Axis: Communications, Categories of Actions: Development, Implementation of local access broadband networks).
