RINGrid

Definition :

The RINGrid (RemoteInstrumentationinNext-generationGrids) is a European project aiming at the study of the requirements for the unification of scientific or other instruments with the grid technologies, as well as the design of a respective general architecture towards this direction. RINGrid is the base of the relevant work in the existing infrastructures (middleware, fabric, network), as well as the under development technologies that are considered to be relevant with the object which is under study. Taking in mind the afore mentioned, the demands of the users and the generally accepted standards, then the project will end up in a total of proposals and suggestions for the effective unification between Grid and the instruments from the field of the experimental sciences, sensors and the remote equipment in general.

Duration :

18 months: 01/10/2006 - 31/03/2008

Objectives :

Main objective of the project is the diffusion of remote access in scientific or other type equipment, especially in cases in those cases that the equipment s rare and expensive. This way, the scientific communities are assisted by the less developed or/and poverty-stricken areas of the world which are able to have access -for their experiments- in instruments that in any other case would be able to use only after time consuming and expensive trips. The project does not deal with the development of software or the installation of infrastructures and as a result its great impact concerns the study that might provide directions and counsels for the respective technical projects.

Funding :

The 75% comes from EU resources while the remaining 25% from national funding.
