GN2

Definition :
The so-called project GN2- Multi-Gigabit European Academic Network aims at the upgrade of the European Research and Educational Network infrastructure of New Generation Internet., the development of GEANT2 Network (http://www.geant2.net). The project is performed with the participation of 31 Research and Education Networks of Europe (National Research & Education Networks – NRENs). GN2 comes after the GN1, in the frame of which GEANT network was created, interconnecting the European NRENs infrastructures with services exceeding to a large extent the ones provided by the commercial use of the Network. The project is coordinated by the urban company of Research & Educational networks for the provision of Internet technologies in Europe DANTE (UK), with the significant participation of the Pan European Organization of Research – Academic TERENA (NL).
Duration :
Beginning: 01/09/2004, End: 31/8/2008
Objectives :
In order to support their demands in computing power and Internet interconnection, Research and Education are based to a large extent on the availability of the state of the art infrastructures. Such infrastructure should be available to isolated users so that they have access to different working environments in the frame of the European Area of Research – mostly in computing centers or laboratories, but at the same time satisfying the demands of the users for mobility.
It should also provide connection at extra high speeds between the various nodes in Europe and the distributed Research and Academic Networks, as well as the expansion of these connections at global level. The projects that preceded aimed mostly at the development of a Pan-European infrastructure, which the GN2 project continues and upgrades with the form of the high performances Pan-European network GÉANT2, that interconnects the European National Research and Academic Networks.
Furthermore, GN2 project includes innovative actions in regards to:
(i) The support of research groups in international co-operations with special requirements (with the support of the Grid infrastructures in the frame of the 6th FP being the most characteristic example) and
(ii) The best incorporation of the services developed in Europe and the global community both at qualitative and quantitative level. The most important fact for the end users is the provision of high quality services which are required for their research and education activities in an environment where the always increased demands are satisfied through the rapidly developed technologies.
The academic community will continue being the instrument for the pilot function and diffusion of the ICT services which tomorrow will be incorporated in the services used by the whole society. The Pan-European research network GÉANT2 -as well as the services that frame it- constitutes an infrastructure of strategic importance for the definition of the European Area of Research.
