SEE-GRID-2

Definition :

During the last years, a number of significant efforts take place in regards to the development of e-infrastructures. These efforts aim at the establishment of cooperation standards for the use of computing resources and data from various regions of Europe and worldwide. The regional initiative SEE-GRID has recently proved that a geographically independent group of computing resources may be of essential scientific value in a less privileged region, such as the one the Southeastern Europe (SEE). Through the creation of the SEE regional infrastructure and its interconnection with the Pan European and the global e-infrastructures, the developed countries of the Southeastern Europe may benefit from the distributed computing operation and the advanced applications which would not be available in any other case at a local scale. This is how the fundamental objective of the reduction of the digital gap is being materialized in the region of Southeastern Europe and equal chances to citizens are being assured.

Duration :

Beginning: 01/05/2006, End: 30/4/2008, Duration: 24 months

Objectives :

Assurance of the viable development & function

The viability of the e-infrastructure is the number one priority of the SEE-GRID-2 project and it is being achieved mostly through the participation and cooperation of the national governments and research/academic communities in every country of the South-eastern Europe. The efforts in regards to the viability of the infrastructures are supported by the framework of the National Grid Initiatives (NGI), with the maturing of the organizational structures of the computing grid and provision of reliable services, the establishment and function of the GridOperationCentres included, and the NationalGridCertificationAuthorities. Furthermore, the meetings of results’ diffusion and the events for the promotion of the public relations will be used for improving the levels of informing the public regarding the e-infrastructures and the formulation of the national and regional policy along with the financial reinforcement, aiming at the vision of the viability of the infrastructures.
